The communication system broke down for several reasons. First, the strong winds knocked down telphone lines and towers. Also the mayor and govoner were not communiating remotly enough.
Hurricane was a digital test of a cat 3 hurricane hitting new orleans. The test was to see what might happen and is likly to. It was unsuccesful in helping prepare for Katrina because Katrina was a cat. 5 hurricane while pam was a cat. 3.
People remained for many reasons. Some could not afford to leave or were not able to. Some others did not expect it to be so powerful and decided to board up their windows and stay not knowing the dammage it will do.
The people that stayed faced endless debres and flooding. Many people drowned becausee they were unable to get on the roof of heigher floors. Also diesese spread easily because of all the dead bodies lying around. Also mass crime and starvation spread. Dehydration was common due to the sun beating down on them all day and little to no drinking water. People that stayed in the convention center or superdome fac@ed overcrowding discusting conditions and possible death.
Some people criticized bush for many things people think he did not handle properly. First in his speach from his ranch he barly spke about katrina, only 200 words or so. Also he and the govoner were not communicating properly to coordinate an evacuation or emergency supplies.
Floodwater posed many chalanges and problems that made it diffacult for people that remained and resuers. It ment that many rescues needed to be done via boat and diabled most car or bus transportation. Also it traped many people in their attics or on roofs. It also made transporting emergency supplies diffacult and slow going.
Fema faced a lot of criticizm for how they handled the rescues and supplies. First they did not alow redcross or other organisations vehicles in new orleans because they said that it might interfear with gtheir opperations. Also they spent a lot of time coordinationd effort on ours and not actualy helping them. They ended up not acomplishing much and their director later resigned.
I feel that we have learned about how to deal with a major crisis on our own soil and how not to handle communicaton betwenn all levels of the government. Also I feel that we learned how to respond to desasters with effeciency and a sece of ergency. Also how to communicate and coordinate relif efforts.

Also, when there was a big hurricane long time ago the president actually went around to the people to help them and to see what the case was, Bush mostly just flew over everything and heard second hand.

The floodwaters posed a lot of hazards because the water would become toxic and the sewage lines would leak into the flooded water which had rotting corps and other debris floating around in. People could drown in the flooded water and it was harder to get to safety.

As a result of Hurricane Katrina, I think FEMA has learned that they had better respond better to such situations. I also think that people in hurricane regions have learned to take hurricane more seriously. Builders know that levees have to be built to withstand more. Altogether, a lot of lessons were learned, probably mostly from the government. One important lesson is that if there is an evacuation, our government should help us with transportation and a place to stay.

One major cause was from the Hurricane taking out the electricity (thus making it impossible to call by phone)so that the government could not learn about what was hapening in New orleans. Then there was the fact that President Bush, Mayor Ray Naegen, and Governer BLanco were just not agreeing with each other. They were disagreeing more than they were acting upon the disaster Hurricane Katrina left in New Orleans
2. Hurricane Pam was a simulation Hurricane that, using the predicted force of Hurricane Katrina, told sciaentists that New Orleans would not last. It predicted that the leveys would break and it predicted that New Orleans would flood and not many people would survive even in the Super Dome because of the after effects.
3.People stayed home for two reasons. One reason was that they did not want to leave behind their memories or they did not know what things they should thake with them when leaving. Leaving your home and not knowing if it will still be there after the Hurricane is a very hard thing to do. the second reason is that some people did not have cars to travel in or could not afford the price a bus, train, or flight ticket would bring. The poor or homeless especially had no choice but to stay and wait out the Hurricane.
4. The after affects of Hurricane Katrina killed more than during the Hurricane. People already knew to stay indoors in oreder to protect themsleves from flying debris but people did not know that the leveys would end up breaking. Water flooded allthe homes forcing people to break through their roofs or find other
higher shelter. People who didn;t have the strength or just ended up getting trapped were drowned or poisoned by the mix of ocen, sewege, and any other liquids that might have gotten mixed in.

Hopefully the government learned how to respond to situations similar to Katrina.
It was very hard for people to communicate due to the black out and more. The tension grew between most people. People did more than others to get the communication problems resolved.

There was lot's of disorganization and mis-communication because none of them had agreed on a solid plan of what to do and they all had their own agenda or plan. 2) The purpose of Hurricane Pam was a simulation of the outcome of if an actual hurricane hit New Orleans. Some of the outcomes in Pam were things like disease and many casualties. The simulation was made to plan out ahead what they'd do when the actual storm hit. It ended up turning out that what happened in the simulation is exactly what happened during with Katrina. 3) Many people remained in New Orleans after the evacuation order because they had lived their for so long and their life w2as there and they didn't feel comfortable leaving. Some that lived their also thought that since they had lived through other storms that they'd be able to "ride out" Katrina. Some of the residents were also too poor to afford transportation like cars, trains, and buses.
4)One of the major problems that existed for peole trapped in the city was that the streets were flooded with water that was filled with murk, filth, and sewage and it hard to navigate through the city. Another problem was that the water was a health hazard because of all the sewage in the water. 5) I think one lesson that we learned as a result of Katrina was that one, the levys in New Orleans need to be reinforced when the city's rebuilt and that a solid emergency plan should be made beforehand and that we should be able to act fast in a situation like because one of the major problems was that food trucks came in too slow,

5.there was criticism of george bush because his reaction to katrina was careless. so people got mad at him.

1) The communication system broke down because the winds were so strong. Debris was flying everywhere. The phone lines broke and there was a black out. Also, it wasn't just because of what physically happened. The governor wanted to do things her way and wasn't in sync with the mayor and Bush.
2) Hurricane Pam was like a simulation of Hurricane Katrina. It was made to predict what Katrina would do. It showed where she would attack and how. It also showed the weather so then you could predict how much to be ready for it. But there wasn't enough protection, Katrina was way stronger. She hit where they thought she would but the people wouldn't listen.
3) Lots of people stayed home because their life was there. They didn't want to leave all their memories behind. Also, some thought it wasn't going to be that bad of a hurricane. Others just couldn't leave. They were too poor. They didn't have the money for a car, gas or any other transportation.
4) It was a health hazard in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. Sewage filled water washed up everywhere. It was hot and dead bodies where floating around or just laying on the ground. Debris made piled on top of one another.People were stuck, hot, hungry, thirsty and tired.
5) Bush came to New Orleans days after Katrina hit. He was slow. He wasn't really in sync with the governor. He didn't act fast enough. Also, he said very little about Katrina at his speech.
6) The floods made the process slower. It was hard to get a bunch of supplies to the people it there was a bunch of water. People couldn't evacuate that quick. Helicopters had to take huge bags of sand and drop it where the wall was damaged and water got in. Also, people were stuck in there homes. If they couldn't get out in time before their house filled up with water, they would suffocate and drown.
7) FEMA was too slow. They promised and kept promising to bring supplies when they didn't. They haven't even sent some supplies yet that they said they would send in 2005. They didn't really care about the people. They went at their own pace. When it was 9/11, help came much faster.
8) We need a quicker evacuation plan. We need help to come faster. We need the governor and president to agree on a plan with out a lot of arguing. Everyone needs to evacuate. They should send shuttle buses.
