After the earthquake had happened it caused minor injuries to some people. It also broke down some walls and made products fall off shelves from stores. Also it caused loss in electricity that might have afeected some towns for some hours.
What you must do in order to stay safe from an earthquake is that if you are indoors you basically have to stay far away from glass. In order to do this you might want to go under a furniture or if you are in bed saty there and cover your face. Also you may move to a door that you think is willing to not fall down. If you are outdoors basically stay where you are and move as far away from buildings. If in car that means that you will have to stay there and not park near buildings which means stay close to the middle of the road and stop.
A particularly large earthquake struck northern california last saturday. The earthquake, bringing in a whopping 6.5 magnitude read, claimed no lives, nor caused any major injuries. The epicenter of the earthquake was just offshore of Northern California. The earthquake hit near Crescent City, CA but was felt all the way in Reno, Nevada. A hospital in Arcata had to run on generators because their electricity went out and the entire hospital was left in the dark. Also, many member of costal communities were worried that the earthquake may trigger a tsunami, which had happened before in the past when a 9.2 earthquake struck in Alaska.
In order to stay safe during an earthquake you need to get under a desk if you're in school or an office setting. If you are at home try to get under a strong doorway. Make sure to stay away from glass or furniture that you think might fall (like a flat screen TV). Also, if your in bed when the earthquake happens then you should put a pillow on your head in order to protect yourself. However never, don't ever, use the elevators during an earthquake, they could fall or lose electricity. If you're driving in a car stop as soon as it's safe. It is important that in these situations, you know how to stay safe. If you are inside, you should take cover and wait until the earthquake stops. The tremble which reported the attack didn't strike until 4:27 pm and no one didn't receive any major injuries. It caused so much more damage to Haiti than the earthquake in California caused to them. A good amount of people died. This article is about the earthquake that hit the capital off Haiti but was felt also in the nearby area. Haiti is located on a fault in the Earth's crust so it gets hit by many natural disasters which take a toll on the countries infrastructure. The country is very poor so it does not really have the means to deal with the crisis.
This epidemic has caught the eye of the whole world. Countries like China and Japan are swooping into action and helping out as much as they possibly can. Even the U.S. is trying there best to help the people in Haiti. It was the biggest Quake in 200 years and there can be up to as many as 500,000 casualties but they don't have any exact numbers.

Tuesdays incident was a call for help around the world when an earthquake demolished Haiti's capital, Port- Au-Prince. With people dead and struggling with survival, Countries around the world such as The United States and Dominican Republic, came to help with emergency supplies as others are just hearing about the news now. Most people are unable to come in contact with their family and friends while other fly there to remorse on this tragic event and help with needed aid while others are wandering around the capital finding injured and possibly dead family members and friends. *(I'll finish later)*

In Haiti there was an Earthquake that has a 7 magnitude. It hit the hardest under the national palace, which is one of the most famous places in Haiti. People suspect that there is about 100,000 people dead found and that there is going to be half a million people dead. When the Earthquake happened it was so strong that Dominican Republic felt it, and they acted quickly and tried to contact Haiti but they couldn't contact them because the phone lines were dead. I agree with what everyone has said because your safety is what is important when you are in situations like these. these instructions are very simple to follow, yet it can be very difficult when you are inshock in the middle of a place where rubble fills the streets. What happened in Haiti was epic. Just before 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday the 12th, Haiti was hit with an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.0. Most everything was destroyed, houses, important buildings, streets, poles and much more. Many people got stuck under all the debris. A lot of those people died because they couldn’t get help fast enough. This is the worst thing that has happened to this region since 200 years ago. Everybody is trying to help. The U.S. is bringing supplies over to Haiti.

I read an article about the 7.0 magnitude earthquake that recently shook Haiti's capital. Haiti is a small country that shares the same island as the Dominican Republic. DR and was also shaken by some of the earrthquakes power but there have been no deaths reported there. Unfortunatly we have already found around 50,000 lifeless bodies in Haiti and are at this moment, still finding more. I was extremly surpried to find out how powerfull the earthquake was and am interested in finding out why. I can't beleive any country in the world could be hit by such a powerful blow.

Many lost their lives others were injured and more is to come of this earthquake and it's trauma. Everyone is confused, nervous and very depressed about the ruins of this beautiful country. With the country now in anxiety the amount of dust in the cities just seem to keep on increasing. The earthquake was part of the southern Haitian area and the country was already on the end of the Earth's core to being with. Everyone is worried and will continue to try and contact their relatives.
I was shocked to see this newspaper article and feel very upset about this matter. This natural disaster was started from the inner core and I cannot believe that such a shake could have even been caused from the earth. The fact that so many people have lost their lives really hurts me because it wasn't their fault in the beginning. It's unfair to see that such a beautiful country is in so much.
I agree with Sydni and AJ the earthquake in Haiti was very serious. The conflicts involving the countries are terrible and no country should face it. But an earthquake is a natural disaster if the cause of the earthquake was due to climate change or not is an even deeper situation at hand.
a 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit Haiti hard tuesday. It destroyed alot of things like hospitals caved in trapping and killing alot of people inside. also the same incindent happend at lots of schools like ours. The national palace in port-au--prince collapsed. Many imports people are missing also like 16 UN peacekeepers were killed, 140 UN workers are missing, and the citys archbishiop was feard dead.
It is really sad but people were trying to help out. Like several Red Cross field teams went out to help the destroyed country. Obama called this disaster "truly heart wrenching." So he sent search and rescue teams out. El savador sent 100 tons of ready to eat meals out. The UN is freeing up to $10 million in emergancy realif money and the European Union pledged $4.4 million. So their are lots of people trying to help out haiti after this horrible crime.
Just two days ago a monstrous magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck Haiti causing many buildings to collapse and many deaths and injuries. The earthquake ravaged the capital of Port-au-Prince, which came as a shock to many considering that Port-au-Prince is in the south of Haiti as opposed to the north, which sits on a fault between the North American and Caribbean Tectonic Plates. As it turned out though, the south did have a history with earthquakes. This earthquake was a particular danger, due to the flimsy construction of the buildings in Haiti, which caused them to topple almost instantly, as opposed to the 6.5 magnitude earthquake in California a few days earlier. This quake claimed no lives, due mainly in part to the strong construction of the buildings there. So, it goes to show how the possible impact of an earthquake need not always be measured in magnitude.
In the event of the earthquake there are many ways for a given individual to stay safe, depending on their placement at the time of the quake. If inside, the person should curl up, cover there head and move under a desk, table or somewhere else that falling objects will not harm them. If possible, they should try to go outside, but this will increase their vulnerability to injury. They should on no occasion use the elevators. If the person is outside they should stay away from buildings, streetlights, utility wires or walls. It is best that they stay outside. If they are in a vehicle they must stop in an open place and avoid bridges, ramps and other collapsable objects. If they are trapped under debris must not light a match or play with dust. They must tap on something or use a whistle to get help. Only in dire situations should they shout, as this will lead to inhaling dust.
I am going to have to respond to Karl. Some of your advice seems like you just made it up. Why go to a place with natural dirt coverings in particular? Also, dropping plastic is something that isn't good to do, but it's not going to save you in event of an earthquake. Also why go to the forest? Wouldn't the trees be falling. Finally when you say "go to the forest and bring some food," that sounds more like some sort of post apocalyptic "the end is near. We must set up new societes in th forest," sort of plan.
I want to respond to what Sydni had said earlier about the earthquake that hit California. It is interesting to hear about both Haiti and California because both earthquakes happened around the time. Californias earthquake hit only weeks before the one in Haiti. The magnitude of both earthquakes are around the same. California was 6.5 and Haiti 7.0, and both are as you can see very powerful and destructive. I want to say that I liked how Sydni explained how many people are hurt during natural disasters most of the time because they do not know what to do during one. You can have a way bigger survival chance if you know what your doing instead oflosing your focus and losing hope.
In California, Eureka, a 6.5 magnitude earthquake hit them. the earthquake hit them at 4:27pm snapping power lines, toppling chimneys, and shattering windows. there are no reports of major injures. this earthquake traveled 33 miles southwest of the coastal city of 26,00. this earthquake frightened everyone and they feared of a tsunami.
To stay safe from a earthquake you must run under a table and hold onto it until it stops. when you're outside in the streets, stay away from buildings because they will most likely fall. never stay in any building because who knows if it might fall on you and you will be trapped or dead. being outside on the streets is safer. it is better to run to the park because there are no buildings there.

What happened in Haiti was a 7.0 earthquake. it happened 5 miles from the capital, Port-Au-Prince. Its hospital crumbled and collapsed on top of any one in it. There is no communication with them yet, if there were any at this point, it would be a very slight transmission. A collapsed grocery store has been robbed/looted.
In order to stay safe in a/ during a earthquake, you need to do the most important thing, DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES MOVE IN OR OUT OF VEHICLES OR BUILDING DURING A EARTHQUAKE. If you are inside a building, you first hide under some stable table/chair/desk. Then hold on to it. If you are in a area that does not contain tables, chairs, or desks, then cover your face with your arms and hide in a corner.If you are in a car, stop as quickly as the law/safety lets you. if you are trapped under something you, stay calm and don't scream, unless its your last resort.

What happened in Haiti was that a 7.0 earthquake struck on Tuesday, January 12th 2010 at 4pm. The earthquake caused massive damage and problems. Many people were killed or severely hurt. The quake spread about 5 miles. The quake caused all buildings to collapse. There were no more hospitals so for the people with broken bones or worse, they could not be cured of it. About 9 million people were killed.
Here are some things you should do if you are in an earthquake. If you are indoors, immediately go under a table or other furniture. Don't go near objects especially large ones such as Lamps(from ceiling)Chandlers, fans, etc. If you are outdoors, stay calm. go away from objects like buildings, cars, lamp posts, etc. Run to a safer area like in the middle of a street away from any objects. Just stay in that area and don't move unless you REALLY need to like if something is coming your way and when it"s over.
When the earthquake hit them it was tough. It hit at about 4:23PM. The death toll coming to a sad number of 100,000 and counting. They even felt in cuba. All communication was lost with the outside world. All political buildings were destroyed. Many other buildings were desyroyed like markets hospital and many other important places.

I don't necessarily agree with some poeple about putting a pillow over your head because the pillow wouldn't protect you, or under a desk because if the roof collapes then the table might cllapse too. A 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit Haiti's capital called Port Au Prince. This earthquake has caused a very high death toll. This earthquake is the strongest earthquake ever to hit this region. Hospital buildings have collapsed so the United States and the Dominican Republic went to help the with emergency supplies for those who are injured. Many people were left without homes and family members. Many people have been trying to communicate with family members but the phone lines are not working.
In order to stay safe during a earthquake you must always be in doors and not move around a lot. The reason it is safer than outside is because furniture or objects can easily hit you because you are not covering yourself. Haiti was just hit by an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.0 and was centered at about 10 miles W. of the capital. Haiti is on an island called Hispaniola and shares this island with the Dominican Republic. It is said that Santa Domingo, in the Dr, also felt a little of the earthquake. Also a big issue they have is that there is no longer a hospital for the injured. People are saying that they are the "poorest" country in the world. Yes that may be an issue but it is not their name, they have culture and language. They are not just poor they are filled with hope and life.

When inside, take cover, and cover your mouth. Stay away from windows, glass, and doors. A lot of deaths and injures related to earthquakes are from flying glass and falling objects.
I agree with ingird, it most be scary for family and friends. But as you can see people don't give up hope and they keep trying to find others. I agree that you should bring maybe some food and other things, but when in an earthquake you kind of can't. Its dangerous and you might not have time. Watching it on the news and the pictures i see, it just gets worse in my head. But i know that they can make it through this but we can help by donating.

What happened in Haiti took place Tuesday 12 in the afternoon at about 4:30 pm. It experienced an earthquake with a 6.5-7.0 magnitude, which is extremely strong. Haiti has also had a history of earthquakes, which have been very strong. The strongest was in 1770 and another one with a 8.0 temblor which took place in it's neighboring country, Dominican Republic in 1949. So basically, earthquakes are common in Haiti, and scientists researched that this earthquake could have been due to the tectonic plates which are between the Caribbean and United States so this could have been a slip strike fault but nothing is for certain yet. The funny this is though, scientists knew that the fault could have lead to a probable earthquake yet it wasn't taken seriously. The fault is very shallow and weak and on top of that, due to the fact that Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere, they're poorly built homes were easily destroyed. In fact they could have even been destroyed with an earthquake having a smaller magnitude.
In order to stay safe for ANY earthquake, it is crucial to stay under a sturdy surface to avoid being hit from falling heavy/dangerous items. Also, stay away from glass and anything that can cause harm. Avoid elevators, the outdoors, and cars for obvious reasons such as the elevator becoming completely invalid thus killing you in the long run, the outdoors where you're vulnerable to any sort of strange, graphic death, and cars where you can roll over or crash. Be in a clear area where you are not vulnerable to falling items and things that smash. You never know how strong an earthquake can become, so always be on the safe side and think positive when you're in a bad situation. This can help you calm down and think straight when in a dire circumstance.
I completely agree with Agon. If it isn't possible to stay in a clear space, use any sort of cushion like object in order to soften the blow when you get hit. You can be resourceful and protect yourself from items around you. I also think keeping a phone with you is necessary (you never know) just in case. Using resources around you won't harm you, and when the shaking is done, still stay away from tall items, etc. because they may be at their peak of falling off eventually.

Mutliple buildings had collasped like hospitals,and airports,and many other important artifacts that hold important meaning to Haiti. Many troops including the U.S., Canada,France, other parts of Europe and Asia have sent help off to Haiti, in order to find some living survivors. Haiti's death toll has reached to 100,000 and is estimated to rise.
Many ways to stay safe is to immediately drop to the ground and curl under a sturdy table. Stay away from glass, windows, and the doors. Avoid any atempts of using the elevator, it isn't safe, stay in one spot and keep your head safe. If you are outside it is best that you stay away from the buildings. If you are in your car stay in THE CAR and avoid going near the sidewalks it is best that you stay in the middle of the street.
I'd like to say that I agree with most of the people who posted on the blog, all of there responces were very descriptive and if I knew nothing of these earth quakes I would get alot of information from all the posts. In Haiti's an earthquake hits the capital 10 miles away leaving a lot of debris. A bunch of buildings collapsed killing thousands of innocent people. It had a magnitude of 7. The earthquake destroyed many places they had and some people are still buried under all that left over trash.
If you are indoors hide under a table or a piece of furniture and don't come out until the shaking has stopped. Try not to go under lamps and other things hanging cause they could come crashing down on you. If you are out move away from street lights, building etc. If you are in a vehicle stop it as quickly as possible avoid stopping near buildings and other places. If you are trapped under debris don't light a match, don't move or kick up dust, try to cover your mouth, and try to find a way to show people that your there by either blowing a whistle if you have one or screaming.
I agree with Tai and Agon you should try to be away from any objects that could hurt you in someway. It think it would also be good to have a phone try to see if you can call for help. Try to find safe places to hide. Try to cover yourself with objects that can protect you like a pillow.

Hatii has caught the eye of the whole world right now. A huge earthquake hit reporting having a magnitude up to 7. Yes your eyes do not decieve you. IT was the biggest quake since 200 years ago. It has killed and estimate of 100,000 people and is expected in the end to kill a grand total of 500,000 people. Haiti is one of the worst economical countries in the world and this epidemic doesn't help. Rescue teams from all over the world including the U.S. are swooping into action to help the Haitans.
The most important thing to do is to stay away from shelf with objects on them. When the quake happens these objects could fall on your hear injuring. It is best to be inside but under a table or a chair. If you do go out side stay away from buildings because they might collapse. And Karl I don't think we need to worry about volcanoes.

Buildings such as schools,chruches,importanat, national, government buildings destryoed in this horrific incident that destroyed Haiti's capital, Port-Au-Prince. With many bodies unfound and many stuck under buildings they have struggled to make it out of this devistaing time. The red cross and Dominican Reupulic has sent emergency supplies to help aid Hiatian's. At this time, the cause of the incident has not fully been identified but we know that there has not been an earthquake this string in Hiati for 200 years.
During an earthquake, it is important to be safe. Staying under hearty, strng furniture is good protection if something was to fall from the ceiling. It is important to stay away from dangerous, sharp objects. Glass or any type of glass, you should stay away from. i agree with what what said becuase i feel that this was a very big put down for the country of Haiti and it was a very sad and depressing incident who killed and injured amny peoople. i also think that it was shocking to see because it was very unexpected. Nobody was imagining for this to happen
An earthquake of 6.5 magnitude hit Eureka, California. on saturday. Windows shattered and power lines snapped. The earthquake knocked everything down in the aisles of a Natural Foods store. There were no reported injuries, but many people feared a tsunami. The quake was felt as far north as Oregon and as far south as Santa Cruz.
To stay safe from an earth quake, you have to stay away from glass or anything that can shatter. If indoors, you have to take cover under furniture. Don't use elevators and be aware that the electricity may go out. If outdoors, stay away from buildings. If stuck in debris, cover your mouth with a handkerchief or clothing.
I agree with Katey about safety. It's easy to get cut up if you are near glass in an earthquake. Buildings can fall on top of people and crush their innards. If people forget the logical things to do, they'll probably end up running inside or staying near a window, in which case, mass chaos is sure to ensue.

I think that the is a very serious issue. Many lives were lost during this experience. And it will be with the survivors forever. It was a very strong earthquake. It took down a bunch of houses. And stole a bunch of peoples lives. I think that we should try harder to prevent from this happening again. Because it most certainly causes a lot of rucus. And if there is any way to stop it we should go after it.

This is my response to Ben's question; is this disaster is a result of climate change? I think that this earthquake in Haiti was a result of it's winter dry season. I connected my mother's very dry skin to Haiti. In the winter, my mom gets very dry and cracked skin on her hands. This happens because there isn't much moisture in the air. I believe that a similar tragedy happened in Haiti. Haiti is, sadly, a very dry country.

This is such a scary thing to have to experience. I can't even imagine myself having to go through something like this; watching my city fall apart, not being able to do anything about it, not having any way of calling for help, and above all the pity. We (802) were talking about this in global studies class today, of how we think differently to what we do know/ don't know very well. We feel bad for these "poor people" in Haiti, "we have so much, and they have lost everything." Not even all the pictures in the news papers and the journal web sights can photograph the pain and struggle these people are going through right now. And the worst part of it for me is that I am eating dinner with my family, happy, while these people are dying, and I know it. I as a 13 year- old student can't do much about it, we can't really prevent these things to happen. I guess all we can do is move on. Life happens.

On Tuesday, an Earthquake hit the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. 4-5 people in Haiti are experiencing poverty and that Earthquake didn't help anything. 9 million+ people were affected by what can be considered the worst disaster to ever hit that Western region. As a result of the quake, all government buildings were destroyed which left Haiti with no communication with other regions around the globe.
There's lots of things to do when you're notified that an Earthquake is going to hit. First, try you best to keep away from structures made from material that can kill you. For example, buildings made of bricks and extremely tall structures such as churches, government buildings, etc. On the other hand, if you're indoors, you should close your doors as tightly as possible. Stay away from objects that you know can hurt you coming at a certain speed. Glass is definitely something you want to avoid being around which means staying away from windows. The safest way to deal with an indoor situation is a go into a room, close the door tight, and hide behind objects that can protect you such as sofas, etc.

There are a lot of specific things you can avoid by just following these steps. Always stay on your toes meaning always be prepared for a natural disaster. There's always a possibility it can happen to you so there no such thing as being overly careful and or prepared when it comes to something that can devastate and leave over 9 million people homeless.
This week on Tuesday, there was a large and powerful earthquake hit Haiti, right before 5pm. At there, the earthquake's magnitude was about 7.0. There were soo many buildings like the National Palace (at Port-au-Prince), Rue Capois, hotels, and houses got collapsed during it happened. Many people got injuries from the earthquake. There are still more than hundreds of people are missing. The last time that hit the same magnitude at Haiti was in year of 1751. Right now, some people are living in outside (or in the hospital or somewhere-else that many people stays).
To be safe during the earthquake happens, you need to be at-least faraway from the tall and big buildings like the Empire State buildings and more. It would totally make hundreds or thousands of people die from getting hit or squish by it. Also when you are in any house, get away from the windows, glass, or anything that would brake easily. That because when you are near to it, you would get lots and big injury on your own body.

A very bad earthquake hit Haiti on 1/12/10. This powerful earthquake was of magnitude 7.0- possibly the strongest earth quake in more then 200 years. There were a lot of aftershocks that destroyed almost all schools,hospitals and homes. These buildings collapsed into the streets of Port-au-Prince. This affected over 9 million people. When buildings collapse most of the people in side died. Till today there is not a number of how many people died or was injered in the quake.
There are many ways to stay safe in an earthquake. If you are inside do not stay by a window or any glass. If you are in a car stop on stay way from ramps and bridges. If you are outside STAY THERE. also if you are under debris cover your mouth and dont move.
